Gene Henson has been in banking for more than 42 years and chose helping people with their finances over simply counting money as an accountant after college.

"I had a degree in accounting but I was not sure that I wanted to actually go into public accounting," said Henson, the regional president for Trustmark Bank in Memphis and North Mississippi, including DeSoto County's locations in Southaven, Hernando, Horn Lake and Olive Branch. "I felt that the accounting degree would be beneficial to me but I didn't know if that's what I wanted to do every day and had the opportunity to start my career in banking. I started it without knowing exactly where it would lead."

This past week, Henson oversaw the groundbreaking of Trustmark Bank's newest location at 2853 Goodman Road East in Southaven, next to the CVS Pharmacy location near Goodman and Getwell Road.

Henson said the building, expected to be completed by late summer 2019, will have the latest technology but keep the personal touch that Trustmark has been known for.

"We will have a very much state-of-the-art, full service banking facility that will intergrate all of the latest technology that anyone would want and enjoy," said Henson. "We'll also have a fully qualified and capable staff in a more traditional bank scenario to go with that new technology."

Henson's career spanning over four decades has seen him go up the ranks to now oversee several banks in the Mid-South.

"During the first portion of my career I worked at two other banks and have been fortunate to have been with Trustmark for the past 28 years," Henson said. "I transferred with Trustmark 13 years ago from our corporate offices down in Jackson, Miss. to Memphis to assume my responsibilities as regional president for Tennessee and North Mississippi markets."

The soon-to-be newest Trustmark location was placed to take advantage of the expected growth in the area of Southaven near the Getwell Road corridor, growth highlighted with the Silo Square mixed-use development now under construction.

"We've been in the Southaven market for 31 years, but we wanted to enhance our footprint here and try to be a little bit more convenient to a part of the Southaven market that we have desired to touch," Henson said. "This lot became available and when we found this lot, we wanted to make it happen and make it work. We believe we found one of the better locations in the entire community."

The Trustmark location will offer everything customers look for from a bank, Henson said.

"We will offer banking services throughout all lines of business throughout the spectrum, from personal consumer banking services to commercial services to wealth management services, including trust, insurance, investments, brokerage, the whole line to meet the needs of all consumers and businesses in the area," Henson pointed out. "We believe that this will position us for many, many years to be able to provide banking and financial services to this ever-growing market."
