A former Memphis Police officer is jailed at the DeSoto County Adult Detention Center in Hernando awaiting extradition.
Andrew Hellums, age 28, was arrested Friday by U.S. Marshals and is wanted on 48 counts of sexual acts against a minor. The acts are alleged to have occurred in San Joaquin, California. A Stockton, California newspaper reported in the incidents involved an eight-year-old during a period from November-January.
Hellums was found Friday in the 8700 block of Hunters Run Drive in Olive Branch and with help from Olive Branch Police Department officers was taken into custody without incident.
In a news release, the U.S. Marshals Service said this was not the first time Hellums has been in trouble. He was arrested in February and charged with sexual exploitation and solicitation of a minor.
