Hernando students visit historic sites

Hernando High School Social Studies teacher Margaret Hicks recently brought her students to the DeSoto County Museum and Hernando Memorial Park Cemetery where they viewed the sights and sounds of history, including the Confederate burial trench, tombstones of yellow fever victims, and just south of the historic Hernando square along U.S. Hwy. 51 where civil rights pioneer James Meredith walked during his "Walk Against Fear" in June of 1966 before being gunned down and nearly killed. "I'm trying to bring all of his history to my kids, to help them relate and take ownership of their community," Hicks said.
