Woman killed in S'haven

Southaven Police are investigating the shooting death of a 57-year-old Southaven woman late Thursday who was found dead in the garage of her home, located near Northwest Mississippi Community College-DeSoto Center.

Southaven Police Chief Steve Pirtle said late Friday that the victim had been identified as Brenda Wright, 57, of Southaven.

"All next of kin that we are aware of have been notified," Pirtle said. "We do not have anyone in custody at this time. The investigation is ongoing."

Southaven Police were called to a residence located in the 900 block of McGowan Drive at approximately 9:40 p.m. Thursday.

The neighborhood is located just north of Northwest Mississippi Community College-DeSoto Center and in close proximity to the Legacy at Church Lake Apartments.

According to DeSoto County Interim Coroner Josh Pounders the woman's body was discovered in her garage by police.

Pounders said that neighbors reported hearing gunshots and called police.

Southaven police responded and found the woman dead at the scene.

"Detectives are investigating to identify a suspect," Pirtle said in a statement earlier Friday.

Wright was said to be at home by herself at the time of the shooting. Wright's husband is said to have left the residence to pick up his stepson and had been gone from the residence for about 15 minutes when the shooting occurred.

"Her body will be sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson for an autopsy," Pounders said.
