A DeSoto Central High School senior remains held after U.S. Magistrate Judge Roy Percy denied him bail on charges of making threats on the internet.
Nathan Caleb Brown, age 19, appeared before Percy at federal court in Oxford Friday regarding a complaint and arrest warrant that charged him with transmitting threats in interstate commerce using social media platforms, such as Twitter.
Percy determined there was probable cause to believe Brown had communicated threats on the internet regarding Snapchat headquarters, along with threats that referenced a school shooting similar to the 1999 Columbine mass shooting.
The magistrate ordered that Brown continue to be held pending the case being sent to the grand jury and denied him bail.
DeSoto County Schools released a statement Friday afternoon regarding the arrest, which read:
“A DeSoto Central High School student has been arrested by the FBI regarding a threatening social media post,” the statement read. “Even though there is no indication at this time that DeSoto Central High School was mentioned, FBI officials indicated that a school shooting was referenced in the post.”
