On Oct. 13, running enthusiasts from the Mid-South and beyond are invited to “Mississippi’s Front Porch” to participate in Hernando’s ninth annual “Water Tower 10K” road race which will highlight the city’s historic districts as well as one of its most-beloved local landmarks.
The 10-kilometer race, which will start Saturday, Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. in the heart of the city at Hernando’s Town Square, features a course that will wind through the city’s scenic, tree-lined streets in the shadow of the Hernando Water Tower.
Built in 1925 and officially designated a Mississippi Landmark (the highest form of recognition bestowed on properties by the state) in 2009, the water tower has figured prominently in local lore through the years and gracing the cover of the Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars’ “Hernando.”
Proceeds from the race will benefit Hernando Excel By 5's Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) with a goal to improve early childhood education by making sure kids have access to age appropriate books. Every child who is enrolled in DPIL between the ages of one month old to five years old, will receive one book a month until their fifth birthday to instill a love of reading and prepare them for kindergarten.
“Hernando Excel By 5 looks for opportunities to improve health, education, child care and community outreach for parents with young children,” said Gia Matheny, Hernando Community Development Director. “Early literacy is an important aspect of preparing our youngest citizens for school and what better way to raise awareness then through our city’s largest race. We are always looking for ways to improve the health of our community and encourage more options for physical activity.”
The City of Hernando Water Tower 10K race not only attracts many runners from the Mid-South but some drive a few hours to take part in the event and visit our quaint historic city. The race route is also well known to those who are practicing for the St. Jude half and full marathons.
Runners and guests are invited to the after-race party which will feature News Channel 3 Meteorologist Todd Demers, Emcee for the awards and door prizes. Live music by local musician Danny McGreger, food and beverages provided by AC’s Steakhouse, Buon Cibo, Coleman’s BBQ, Hernando Golf & Racquet Club, Nothing Bunt Cakes, Papa Johns, Side Alley Café, Sonic, Subway, along with craft beer from the Craft Beer Station.
The first 400 runners will receive a long-sleeve shirt, and goody bag at registration and a heavy commemorative medal at the finish line. Pre-registration will be located at Windy City Grille on Friday, Oct. 12 from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm.
