Raymond E. Turman, 92, passed away Monday, April 23, 2018 at his home in Oxford. Mr. Turman was born in Lin Creek on Aril 22, 1926, moving with his family as a child to Desoto County. He graduated from Hernando High School before attending the University of Mississippi. He entered the Navy V-12 program at Emory University Medical School in Atlanta, returning to the University of Mississippi where he graduated. After graduation, he joined his father in their farming, cattle and dairy business. He was an active member of the Methodist Church. He was also active in the Mississippi Farm Bureau and served as state president of the Mississippi Soil Conservation Service and on the District Board of Directors of the Mississippi Soil and Water Conservation Service from 1958 to 1982. He was president of the Desoto County Economic Development Council in 1980 and was active in the real estate business for several decades in Desoto County. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at New Bethlehem Cemetery in Horn Lake. The memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oxford-University United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Hernando Funeral Home has charge. Survivors include his wife, Jewell G. Turman of Oxford; daughters, Julie T. Starr (Walter H.) of Hernando, Helen T. Lewis (John) of Jackson; son, John Thomas Turman of Southaven; sisters, Margaret T. Lyons (Jerry) of Ridgeland, Helen T. Day (Louis) of Columbia, Tenn.; grandchildren, Drew Lewis (Marjorie), Watson Lewis, Garrison Starr, Susan Turman; great grandson, Michael C. Lewis; caregivers, Tamika Jones, Eula Moore, Venita Phillips, Marilyn Pomerlee-Delbridge. He was preceded in death by his son, Raymond E. Turman Jr.; parents, Frank Sr. and Helen A. Turman; brothers; W.F. Turman Jr., Dr. Prentiss A. Turman; daughter-in-law, Janet Turman; sisters-in-law, Imogene Turman, Grace Turman.
